Honest Question: Is Your Workplace Psychologically Safe? Top 3 Leadership Lessons for Adults with ADHD

Why ADHD-Friendly Workplaces Start with Psychological Safety

When I sat down with Jodi Davidson for this episode of the More Than ADHD™ Podcast, we dove into something every neurodivergent individual deserves: the freedom to CRUSH it at work as your full, authentic self.

If you’ve ever masked 🎭 your ADHD to “fit in” professionally, this conversation is for you. We talk about what it means to create environments where people feel safe to take risks, speak up, and make mistakes without fear.

Psychological safety is the foundation of truly inclusive leadership. And when team members feel safe, they’re not afraid of setting bold goals and actually sharing their honest (unfiltered) opinions. When this happens, the true value of diversity is unleashed!

🎯 That’s why we’re giving away our Free ADHD Goal-Setting Guide, to help you turn clarity into action in a way that works with your brain, not against it.

Grab your free guide and start building a work life that works for you. #RealTalk – I don’t think you’ll download it though. And if you do, you probably won’t use it. I invite you to prove me wrong, and send me an email at Ryan@RyanMayerCoaching.com to let me know that you actually read this, and were inspired to take action. I am convinced that no one will. 😏

Leading with ADHD: Why Self-Compassion Is a Super Skill

Let’s be honest, leadership can be lonely. And for adults with ADHD, that loneliness is often compounded by internalized shame or self-doubt. Sound familiar to anyone?

Jodi and I explored how mindfulness and self-compassion aren’t just helpful, they’re critical tools for ADHD leaders.

They help us slow down, reflect with intention, and stop letting our inner critic run the show. Because the truth is – and this is what helped me to break out of a deeply-engrained negative mindset – we are not defined by how organized our calendar is, we’re defined by how well we show up for our teams and ourselves! Remember: It’s RESULTS that get respect!

ADHD Leadership Strengths: Embrace Collaboration Over Control

Here’s the thing: adults with ADHD often have unique strengths, creativity, empathy, and visionary thinking. (Any other strengths that I missed?) But those strengths shine brightest in environments that allow for collaboration, not micromanagement.

Jodi and I talked about how fostering collaboration leads to better results and healthier teams. (Wait, we can have both?! How cool!) We also shared how playfulness 😜 and joy aren’t distractions; they’re signals of a thriving workplace.

Why Everyone with ADHD Has the Potential to Lead

⚠️ SPOILER ALERT ⚠️ Your leadership impact does not depend on your title! Whether you’re managing a team or just trying to manage your own energy, leadership is about empathy, authenticity, and having the courage to be vulnerable.

If you’ve been hiding parts of yourself, especially your ADHD, to try to fit in… you are not alone. (🙋‍♂️ I did the very same thing for literally YEARS!) Good news – you don’t have to apologize for being who you are. In fact, owning your neurodivergence may be the most powerful career move you ever make.
