The 2-Minute Drill That Melts ADHD Decision Paralysis

Do you ever get stuck choosing what to do next?
Whether it is picking what to eat, which project to start, or even which email to answer first, your ADHD brain can turn simple choices into full-blown mental traffic jams.

Those decisions can be very overwhelming. If that sounds like you, grab your free ADHD guide here → Ultimate Guide to Managing Overwhelm

Now let’s get into it.

Why ADHD Brains Freeze

Decision paralysis happens when your brain stalls out trying to find the “perfect” option. For ADHDers, it is not laziness. It is neurochemistry.

Our prefrontal cortex (the part that manages planning, prioritizing, and follow-through) works harder than a typical brain. Because we naturally have lower baseline dopamine, we crave urgency and novelty to spark action.

So what happens?

—-> We get stuck.

Too – many – choices.

Not. enough. dopamine.

Zero movement.

Sound familiar? You are not alone!

Why “Good Enough” Beats Perfect for ADHD

ADHD Coach Ross shared this live in our RMC Live webinar session and it hit home:

“We wait for the perfect choice instead of making a good one.”

That ADHD perfectionism keeps us frozen. And while the world moves, our ADHD negative self-talk starts spiraling.

The truth is, with ADHD, you do not need a perfect plan. You need momentum.

If perfectionism has been running the show, check out this RMC favorite: Breaking Through ADHD Perfectionism: ADHD-Friendly Strategies. It breaks down how to lower impossible standards and take action even when your brain is screaming, “Not yet.”

The ADHD-Friendly 2 Minute Drill

ADHD Coach Ross shared a framework during our RMC Live Webinar that cuts through paralysis in just two minutes.

Here is how it works 👇

1️⃣ Name the decision.
Be specific. Not “I need to get organized.” Try “Do I answer this email now or after lunch?”

2️⃣ Set a 2 minute timer.
Create urgency. It tricks your brain into action.

3️⃣ Ask 3 questions:
• What is the simplest next step?
• Will this matter in a week?
• What feels energizing or easy right now?

4️⃣ Move forward! (imperfectly).
Take one small step. ANY step beats staying frozen

5️⃣ Reframe your mindset.
(Literally) Say it out loud: “I am not making a perfect choice. I am building momentum.”

Real ADHD Talk from Our RMC Live Webinar

ADHD Coach Ross shared how he hyper-focused for six hours straight building a playlist for his high school reunion until 1:30 a.m. Why? Because there was interest, urgency, and meaning (AKA: three influential dopamine triggers!)

We laughed… and everyone in the chat said they understood. That is ADHD life.

When something feels urgent and emotionally engaging, we can focus. The key is to bring that same energy into everyday tasks through small, structured wins like the 2- Minute Drill.

Regulate ADHD Emotions Before You Decide

Here is something powerful that often gets overlooked. ADHD Decision paralysis does not just live in your mind. It also shows up in your body.

When your nervous system is overloaded, your ability to decide shuts down. That is why slowing your breathing before making choices can help calm the ADHD chaos.

If you have not yet, take a few minutes to read Transform Your ADHD with Conscious Breathwork. It walks you through simple breathing tools that reset your body’s stress response and give your brain space to think clearly.

Pairing breathwork with the 2-Minute Drill helps you pause, reset, and act even on days when your brain feels like a browser with 47 tabs open.

Move Your ADHD Brain: Try It Right Now!

Think of one thing you have been avoiding this week. Maybe it is replying to an email, folding laundry, or scheduling that appointment.

Would you be open to setting a two minute timer and take a few laps around your office or house? Do not overthink it. Just move. After all, as my wife Andrea likes to say: “You’ve got to MOVE to IMPROVE!”

When you finish that task, pause for long enough to celebrate yourself, because you just built momentum – and momentum leads to motivation!
