Rebooting the ADHD Cycle Starts With This One Shift

Every January, I notice the same pattern when working with adults with ADHD.

It’s not a lack of motivation.
It’s a lack of clarity before action.

Too many goals.
Too much pressure.
Too little space to pause and decide what actually matters.

That’s why, when clients ask me where to begin, I rarely start with goal setting. I start with creating breathing room.

The free ADHD friendly productivity guide and the free masterclass I share inside Ryan Mayer Coaching both grew out of that realization. Not because people needed more tactics, but because they needed a calmer starting point. A way to slow the mental noise, get grounded, and move forward intentionally instead of reactively

That same principle is at the core of what I’ll be sharing during Day 2 of the Crush Your ADHD Summit, airing Tuesday January 27th, 2026.

Why the New Year Can Be Especially Tricky for ADHD Brains

A new year brings hope.
It also brings expectations.

For many adults with ADHD, January feels like a test.
Will this be the year things finally stick, or just another restart?

I see this most clearly in the workplace. I wrote about it in ADHD Stress at Work? 5 Proven Shifts to Conquer Your ADHD at Work While Staying Calm and Focused, where we explored how pressure without structure often leads to overwhelm instead of progress.

That same stress cycle shows up internally too. In How to Overcome the ADHD Shame, we talked about how repeated struggles can quietly turn into self blame when no one names what’s really happening.

The issue isn’t effort.
It’s the system we keep trying to operate inside.

The ADHD Shift That Changes Everything

Here’s the shift I’ll be talking about during my session.

Instead of asking
“What’s wrong with me?”

Try asking
“What would make this easier to begin?”

That one question does a lot of work.

It reduces shame.
It opens options.
It creates momentum without burnout.

For ADHD adults, sustainable progress is rarely about pushing harder. It’s about choosing supports that match real life.

What to Expect on Day 2 of the Crush Your ADHD Summit

Alan P. Brown is hosting the free Crush Your ADHD Summit from January 26th through 30th, 2026, bringing together 25 ADHD and executive function experts.

My conversation with Alan airs on Day 2, Tuesday January 27th, and we’ll focus on how adults with ADHD can interrupt recurring cycles and build forward motion that lasts.

We’ll explore:
• Why willpower keeps failing capable ADHD adults
• How negative loops form and how to catch them earlier
• What realistic progress actually looks like
• How to reboot without burning out

If you’ve ever started strong and lost steam, this session was built for you.

A Gentle Place to Start for ADHD Success

If you want to begin applying this perspective now, you’ll find the same themes throughout my work. In the guide, the masterclass, and ongoing conversations inside Ryan Mayer Coaching, the focus stays consistent.

Clarity before action.
Support before pressure.
Progress that respects how your brain works.

This summit is a chance to experience that approach alongside a variety of expert voices and tools.

If you join me on Day 2, I encourage you not to watch with the goal of fixing everything. Just notice what feels lighter, more doable, and more aligned with the life you’re actually living.
