The holiday season is here—a time for joy, family, and celebrations. 🎊 One of my favorite holiday memories of Christmases past is the pure joy on my son’s face when a magical ticket appeared in his coat during a special event! I am so grateful I was in a good mental place to be able to fully enjoy that moment. If you have ADHD, Christmas can bring its fair share of challenges… Between impulse spending, sensory overload, and time blindness, it’s easy to feel holiday overwhelm. Let’s talk about these struggles and how to manage them so you can enjoy the season without unnecessary stress or a steep credit card bill next month!
The Struggle with ADHD Money Management
Christmas is prime time for impulse spending, especially with every store flashing “limited-time” deals. For those with ADHD, resisting the urge to grab just one more perfect gift can feel nearly impossible. Then there’s the added challenge of tracking what you’ve already spent—a task often buried under a mountain of wrapping paper and holiday distractions. No matter how much resistance you may have to it, creating a holiday budget before you shop is necessary to keep our ADHD brains harnessed when sales lure us in!
Tips for Holiday ADHD Budgeting:
- Make a Detailed List: Before shopping, write down exactly who you’re buying for and set a budget for each person.
- Use Budgeting Apps: Apps like Mint or YNAB can help you keep track of spending in real time.
- Shop with Cash or Prepaid Cards: Physically seeing the money leave your hands helps prevent overspending.
- Plan for Hidden Costs: Don’t forget wrapping paper, shipping fees, fuel for travel, or extra treats!
Overcome Overwhelm from Holiday Sensory Overload 😵💫
The lights, music, crowded malls, and constant flurry of activities can easily overwhelm someone with ADHD. The pressure to attend every party, bake every cookie, and find the perfect gift adds to the sensory and emotional overload.
Tips to Reduce Overwhelm:
- Prioritize What Matters: Choose one or two traditions or events that bring you the most joy and skip the rest. ✅ ✅ ❌❌❌
- Schedule “Quiet Days”: Plan downtime between events to recharge. 🧘 🫖 😌
- Set Boundaries: Politely decline invitations or limit the amount of time you spend at gatherings. 🛑 📉
“Sprints” Can Beat Procrastination & Skip the Gift-Wrapping Marathon 🏃♂️
Raise your hand if you’ve ever been up at midnight on Christmas Eve, scrambling to wrap gifts! 🙋ADHD can make it hard to tackle tasks ahead of time, and wrapping presents often feels like a chore you’d rather avoid. 🤦♂️ 😭
Tips for Gift Wrapping:
- Wrap as You Shop: Don’t wait for everything to pile up—wrap gifts as they arrive. 📦
- Create a Wrapping Station: Keep scissors, tape, and paper in one organized spot. ✂️
- Make it Fun: Play your favorite music or turn wrapping into a social event with friends. 🕺
- Use Unique Wrapping Paper: I have a client who uses old newspaper to wrap gifts, and it has become a tradition that everyone in her life has grown to love! 🗞️ 📰
- Reusable Gift Bags!: No more using an entire roll of wrapping paper and tape! (Great for the environment, even BETTER for sleep-deprived sanity!) 🛍️
Tame Time Management During the Holidays
Between school plays, work parties, and family dinners, the calendar fills up fast. ADHD can make it difficult to keep track of deadlines, leading to missed opportunities or last-minute scrambling.
Tips for Time Management:
- Use a Shared Calendar: Sync your schedule with family or friends to avoid surprises. We use Google calendar to make sure we are on the same schedule! 🗓️
- Set Alarms and Reminders: Use your phone to remind you of deadlines for shipping, shopping, and RSVPs. (This is helpful for us when it comes to “time to leave” for and from parties!) ⏰ 🚨
- Delegate Tasks: Let go of the need to do everything yourself—ask for help where you can. (Do you really have to make all the sides for holiday dinner, or can you ask a few guests to bring one?)
Let Go of ADHD Perfection
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of the 🎁 “perfect” 🎁 holiday celebration. You want to create magical memories for your family or show your love through thoughtful gifts. But perfection isn’t the goal—connection is. 🤝 🥰
Tips for Finding Joy:
- Rather than focusing on material things, focus on experiences like watching a favorite movie together, going for a holiday light walk, or building a snowman. ☃️
- Give yourself permission to simplify. Store-bought cookies are just as festive as homemade ones. 🍪
- Remember: The best memories come from being fully present, not a fancy present. 😉
